Advice for Vaccination Clinic Implementation during COVID-19

 31 March 2020

Now more than ever, it is important to maintain high vaccination coverage levels to prevent outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases in the community. Immunisation providers should continue to offer immunisation services with enhanced infection control measures as outlined in the advice from NSW Health.

The advice includes guidance on practice signage, facilitating social distancing for vaccination clinics, clinic set up and PPE usage whilst vaccinating. Suggestions for alternate models for providing vaccinations from your practice are also outlined such as outdoor clinics and offering vaccinations at set times of the day.

Immunisation providers are usually recommended to vaccinate children who have minor illnesses (without acute systemic symptoms/signs). In the setting of the COVID-19 outbreak, immunisation providers should consider deferring routine immunisations for children with respiratory symptoms

Practices are also advised to contact their local Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055 for all immunisation enquiries.

Distribution of the 2020 influenza vaccines will commence in the week beginning 30 March 2020. Please ensure your purpose-built vaccine refrigerator has enough storage capacity to safely store both routine NIP vaccines and 2020 influenza vaccines. If you have concerns regarding your refrigerator storage capacity, please contact the State Vaccine Centre on 1300 656 132 to revise your order or place it hold until storage issues are resolved. Short term vaccine fridge rentals are also available if your practice anticipates needing additional vaccine storage over the flu season.
