Overview

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines it as "a state of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled". Sexually transmissible infections (STIs) are an important SH problem in Australia where 20.2% of males and 16.9% of females had reported that they had been diagnosed with an STI at some stage of their life. General Practitioners are the most common source of treatment for sexually transmissible infections. Also, GPs are normally considered as the first medical contact for men with sexual dysfunction.
