Overview

COPD is a progressive and irreversible lung condition that affects a person's ability to breathe. Often referred to as 'chronic bronchitis' and 'emphysema', COPD is associated with the destruction of lung tissue and a narrowing of the airways. Australia has one of the highest rates of death from the chronic lung disease (COPD) in the developed world. Early diagnosis is essential in optimal COPD management. One in seven Australians 40 years or older has COPD and half of those who have progressed to a stage where they are experiencing symptoms will not know that they have it.
