ANSC July Update: The Royal Hospital for Women

Fetal growth assessment in pregnancy

Over the past few months there have been incidents of growth restriction. In particular, one case of severe Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) resulted in an extremely unwell baby who is lucky to be alive, with outcomes unknown.

It is extremely important to do fundal height assessment at every visit, once palpable.

If the measurement is 3cm above or below the gestational age, refer the woman for ultrasound (preferably at RHW) and follow up the results. If results indicate IUGR call RHW on 9382 6111 and page the on-call O & G Registrar to discuss.

Screening for gestational diabetes

Further to the previous eNewsletter in May 2017, there are still incidents of missed diagnosis of GDM and late referral to the Diabetes Educator.
