NDIS CPD update

Many of you may be aware the Central and Eastern Sydney PHN engaged Dr Mark Bagshaw Innov8 Consulting Group to undertake the CESPHN NDIS Impact Needs and Planning Project. The EIS Board carefully considered the key recommendations and approved the next step in supporting the roll out of the NDIS across our catchment, while also looking to influence PHNs nationally around the need to do more work in this area. CESPHN have developed an operational plan that brings to life a number of the key recommendations, that will prepare our primary care providers and staff for the roll out of the NDIS program in the near future.

One of the recommendations noted that CESPHN develop a Disability Education Program targeted at primary and allied health professionals, focusing on improving their understanding of the whole-of-life aspects of disability and the role of the NDIS.

Stage 1 NDIS Information Sessions that included speakers from the National Disability Insurance Agency, St Vincent's de Paul Local Area Coordinator, Family and Community Services and NSW Health are now complete. Three sessions were held for staff and three for GPs, allied health and service providers, held at our Kogarah and Ashfield Offices and War Memorial Hospital Waverley, venues.

The CPD team provided valuable support to the NDIS transition lead at the GP, allied health and service provider sessions.

The most frequently occurring theme throughout stakeholder engagement, has related to the significant need for better information and knowledge across the disability spectrum, all have identified the need for substantial improvement in this area, particularly around key aspects of the disability reform process, and the introduction of the NDIS.

CESPHN is now currently exploring options to develop/ commission continuing education in this area.
