CPD: Withdrawal Management in the Community

On Tuesday 7 March, over 30 GPs and Allied Health Professionals attended CESPHN’s first Drug and Alcohol Continuing Professional Development event on withdrawal management within the community at Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick. The evening was facilitated by Dr Hester Wilson, GP and Addiction Specialist, along with Associate Professor Nicholas Lintzeris, South Eastern Sydney Local Health District’s Director of Drug and Alcohol Services.

Dr Wilson spoke around effective methods of assessing, diagnosing and treating alcohol and drug withdrawal within a community setting. Associate Professor Lintzeris discussed future strategies of SESLHD for a regional and integrated approach to managing withdrawal more effectively within the community. Attendees outlined the implementation of patient assessment and screening around drug and alcohol use as a change they felt confident in implementing as a result of the event.

This continuing professional development event is part of a broader initiative that CESPHN are undertaking to increase the confidence of general practitioners and allied health professionals to better manage alcohol and drug withdrawal within a community setting and create improved referral pathways using a stepped-care approach.
