Navigating the Mental Health System - Multi Cultural Mental Health Forum Eastern Sydney

On 16 March, approximately 80 frontline community workers who provide services to multicultural communities in South Eastern Sydney joined together at Coogee Surf Club to gain awareness of the mental health sector in the local area.

This forum was a joint initiative by South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Multicultural Health Service, Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Services, Central and Eastern Sydney PHN (CESPHN), Randwick City Council and Transcultural Mental Health Centre.

This was achieved by exploring three hypothetical presentations, indicative of the barriers faced by multi-cultural communities to mental health care. An expert panel consisted of representatives from CESPHN, Community mental health services, Transcultural Mental Health Centre and Eastern Beaches Local Area Command. Attendees were able to hear firsthand from mental health professionals, GP and Police how a referral into their service may be determined as eligible and managed by their service.

The forum also included an opportunity for skills development, by exploring effective ways to use Interpreters.
