ATAPS Perinatal Mental Health Service: How do I refer women?

This service offers up to 12 free sessions with an allied health provider per calendar year for perinatal women. This service is specifically designed as short-term psychological treatment for the prevention and early detection of antenatal and postnatal depression for expectant and new mothers.

Please note: perinatal women are not means tested and are eligible for free psychological intervention.

Referrals can either be:

  1. a full mental health treatment plan from a GP, obstetrician or psychiatrist, which allows six free sessions after which a review is required for a further 7-12 sessions
  2. a provisional referral from maternal and child health nurses which allows one free session for a comprehensive assessment after which the GP will be required to complete a full mental health treatment plan.

To make a referral the GP completes a mental treatment plan. Please see below for your region:

Referral should be faxed to our triage team on 9330 9988. If approved, the client is contacted and an appointment is made with the allied health provider.

Currently our clinicians are based across the region, including eastern Sydney, inner west, St George and Sutherland Shire. Please note, any perinatal referrals in the Sutherland Shire should be faxed directly to 9522 1080. All others should be faxed to 9330 9988.
