The National Vaccine Storage Guidelines 'Strive for 5' third edition now available!

2 July 2019

The National Vaccine Storage Guidelines ‘Strive for 5’ third edition is now available along with new supporting resources. The third edition of the National Vaccine Storage Guidelines 'Strive for 5' were released in June 2019 by the Australian Government, Department of Health.

As the last edition was released in 2013, this is a welcomed update, providing up to date information about safe vaccine storage and key recommendations for effective vaccine storage management, including new supporting resources for immunisation providers.

All staff involved in ordering, handling, managing and administration vaccines are encouraged to review the new guidelines as changes and updates have occurred throughout the document.

The key amendments, and additional guidance included in the third edition are summarised below:
  • Removal of domestic refrigerator advice: Domestic refrigerators (including bar fridges) are not built or designed to store vaccines and must not be used for vaccine storage
  • Section 4: Vaccine temperature monitoring devices – this section has undergone an extensive revision to reflect advances in technology
  • Section 7: Mobile or outreach immunisation clinics – additional guidance has been provided
  • Appendix 5 – Twice daily temperature monitoring chart of vaccines stored in vaccine refrigerators
New Appendices:
  • Appendix 7 – Checklist for mobile or outreach immunisation clinics.
  • Appendix 8 – Monitoring temperature chart for mobile or outreach immunisation clinics.
  • Appendix 9 – Management of power failure checklist.
  • Appendix 10 – Considerations when choosing a purpose-built vaccine refrigerator.
