Let’s celebrate Youth Week!

4 April 2019

This week (10-18 April) is National Youth Week, which is a fantastic way to celebrate all the great things young people add to our society.

National Youth Week V2

If you work with young people, you’ll know that they have distinct health needs from other age groups. Mental health is a particularly important concern for this age group, as this is when a lot of people first experience a mental health problem.

There are lots of things you can do to help support young people in your community.

Get to know your local headspace Centre!

headspace provides a holistic youth-friendly service for young people 12-25. Young people don’t need to have a diagnosis to go to headspace, just the desire to talk to someone and get some help. Find out where your local headspace centre is https://headspace.org.au/headspace-centres/ and organise a visit or a phone call with their practice manager to learn more about how they can support your patients or clients.

We have five in our region- Ashfield, Camperdown, Bondi Junction, Miranda, and Hurstville.

Learn more about youth health.

Come along to CPD events on youth health. We have one in May at Bondi Junction (https://connect.cesphn.org.au/EventDetails?id=a1J2e0000004DndEAE), with another planned for St George (TBC). To be the first to know what’s coming up in your area contact Cat McPherson (c.mcpherson@cesphn.com.au).

headspace has developed free accredited online training for GPs working with young people https://headspace.org.au/health-professionals/gps-and-general-practice-at-headspace/ as well as for allied health professionals https://headspace.org.au/health-professionals/ahp/

Work with young people

Would you like to hone your skills working with young people, or try something new? There are opportunities for GPs and allied health practitioners (social workers, psychologists, and occupational therapists) to do sessions at headspace centres. Talk to the Centre Manager at your local headspace to find out about opportunities, or contact Cat McPherson (c.mcpherson@cesphn.com.au) to find out what centres have availabilities.
