Expression of interest: Speech pathology Talking & Listening Check-Ups

CESPHN and Sydney Local Health District are offering children who attend medical practices the opportunity for free communication screening assessments, called Talking & Listening Check-Ups.

SLHD Community Health Speech Pathologists deliver Talking & Listening Check-Ups as part of an Integrated Care Initiative with the Central and Easter Sydney Primary Health Network. The goal of this project is to provide access to Speech Pathology services in family friendly locations, with a particular focus on the targeted vulnerable suburbs of Darlington, Glebe, Redfern, Waterloo and the former Canterbury Local Government Area. We are seeking expressions of interest to provide the Talking & Listening Check-Up Service in your medical practice. Talking & Listening Check-Ups are completed by qualified Speech Pathologists and are offered to children aged from 0 to 5 years. The service is free, confidential, and voluntary.

Talking & Listening Check-Up Process

  • We would visit your practice for a mutually agreed amount of time.
  • You will be provided with a promotional flyer to advertise the service in your waiting area, or within consults between your GPs and children aged 0-5 years.
  • We require a quiet space somewhere in your practice for us to use to complete the Talking & Listening Check-Ups.
  • The service would run as a Drop In service, with no appointments necessary.
  • The Speech Pathologist will see each child for approximately 20 minutes to do their Check-Up. The Check-Ups are different, depending on the age of the child. All Check-Ups will involve observation of a child’s communication skills including expressive language, receptive language, social skills and speech sounds.
  • The Speech Pathologist will complete a Summary Report for every child who receives a Check-Up. If a child is identified as needing further Speech Pathology or other child health services, or there are any other concerns, the Speech Pathologist will discuss this further with the parents/carers. We will facilitate any referrals that the parents/carers would like to be made.
  • The Summary Report with the results of the Check-Up will be emailed to parents following the Check-Up. A copy of the Summary Report will be sent to your practice, as long as the parents have consented for this to happen.
  • An online survey will be sent to parents and to your practice, to help us to evaluate the service.
