Polio Outbreak in Papua New Guinea - Information for NSW GPs

19 October 2018

Key information:

  • All individuals travelling to Papua New Guinea (PNG) should have completed an age-appropriate course of polio vaccination.
  • Booster doses may be required, depending on the intended length of stay.
  • Consider polio virus in symptomatic returned travellers and those who may have had contact with travellers from PNG.

In June 2018, the PNG Government notified the World Health Organization of an outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus. The outbreak is ongoing and is not isolated to a single area. In some provinces polio vaccine coverage is suboptimal, with low numbers of children having received the recommended course of polio vaccine. Water, sanitation and hygiene are also challenges in the area, and may contribute to further spread.
