MEDIA RELEASE: New psychiatry support line available for Sydney GPs

2 July 2018

Central and Eastern Sydney PHN is excited to announce the launch of a new psychiatry advice service for general practitioners in central and eastern Sydney.

Commencing on 2 July 2018, all general practitioners practising in the Central and Eastern Sydney PHN region will have access to a psychiatrist via a telephone support line, to assist them in managing the mental health care of their patients.

Following a competitive tender process, ProCare Mental Health Services was selected to provide the service due to their proven success in providing a range of high quality mental health services.

This is also the very first time that six primary health networks have joined together to co-commission a service, including Central and Eastern Sydney PHN, Hunter New England and Central Coast PHN, Murrumbidgee PHN, Northern Sydney PHN, South Eastern NSW PHN and Western NSW PHN.

At present, there are no psychiatry advice services for general practitioners anywhere in New South Wales. This new service has been established in response to general practitioners indicating they would like timely access to psychiatry expertise to assist them in managing the care of their patients with mental health problems.

Central and Eastern Sydney PHN Chief Executive Officer, Dr Michael Moore said, “We know approximately 10 per cent of people over 18 years living in central and eastern Sydney experience high or very high psychological distress. This service allows these individuals, whose conditions can be treated within primary care, to remain under the care of their general practitioner”.

The Federal Member for Reid, the Honourable Craig Laundy MP congratulated everyone involved and said, “This new service is an important collaboration by various health networks across NSW, set to deliver general practitioners with crucial information to better help patients experiencing mental health problems”.

General practitioners practising in an eligible Primary Health Network will have access to a psychiatrist on the phone or via secure messaging. The service is free and available Monday to Friday, 9.00 am - 5.00 pm.

Registration for this service is available through or by calling 1800 16 17 18.
