Meningococcal W vaccination for students in Years 11 and 12

6 February 2016

NSW Health advises there has been a significant increase in invasive meningococcal disease caused by serogroup W (see article Meningococcal W becomes predominant serogroup in Australia in 2016).

In light of this, NSW will be offering a single dose of quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine that protects againt serogroups A, C, W and Y to students in Years 11 and 12 through a school-based vaccination program from 1 May 2017.

GPs should be alert for meningococcal disease symptoms in all ages and will be able to offer vaccine to eligible adolescents as vaccine becomes available.
