Free Active Living Fitness Classes

13 June 2019

The Active Living fitness program, funded by Central and Eastern Sydney PHN, will end on 30 June 2019. The Active Living fitness program was established in August 2017 to promote participation in fitness programs for older people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure would lead to an increase in their participation.

Key features of the program were:

  • The program was free for all participants. As most older people with COPD and heart failure are pensioners, financial cost plays a significant role in many individuals’ decision to pursue physical activity.
  • The program was open to all people, not just those who have COPD and heart failure, in recognition of the support that older people with chronic health conditions may need to motivate their participation in routine physical activity.
  • All Active Living instructors were university-qualified exercise professionals. This was to ensure that the program would be safe and suitable for participants.
  • The program sought to enhance the integration between health services. Studies show that the cessation of clinician support following rehabilitation greatly reduces the likelihood of maintaining routine physical activity. As such, the program sought to connect community maintenance with hospital rehabilitation and general practice support.

Funding for the program was through the Commonwealth Department of Health’s Innovation Funding to Central and Eastern Sydney PHN and lasted until June 2018. CESPHN was able to extend funding for the program for 12 months until June 2019. However, this funding has now been exhausted and project deliverables have been completed. As a result, the program will end on 30 June 2019.

As the program was developed as a trial to test this particular model of care, participants in the program have known of the time-limited funding since the establishment of the program. Throughout the program CESPHN has been exploring sustainable funding models that would enable the continuation of classes beyond June 2019. CESPHN are actively considering options with other service providers and have advised participants that up to six groups may be continuing with the support of local organisations. Continuance of two of these groups have been confirmed and will be run at the Cronulla RSL 38 Gerrale St, Cronulla. Call 1300 986 991 or 9523 6833 for more information.

CESPHN is currently in discussions with other providers for the remaining four groups. Additionally, participants are being advised of other local service providers such as walking groups run by the Heart Foundation and private providers who offer group-based sessions.

CESPHN will continue to provide updates on the transition of the Active Living program to all participants, community members and partners through our regular communication channels, including class instructor updates, printed flyers, Facebook, and the CESPHN website and newsletter.

CESPHN recognises the importance of classes of this nature in improving not only the physical health, but the mental health, of older people in our community and will continue to explore further service options in the future.
